Sobriety and Prudence in Latif al-Adhadah (Smartness of Addition) by Ibn Jama`a, Abu Abdullah Izz al-Din Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Kinani al-Hamawi, then al-Masri (749 AH-819 AH): A Study and Revision
Sobriety and Prudence in Latif al-Adhadah
Abstract
The author dealt with an issue in the Arabic grammar, namely that of addition. He talked about its secrets, nuances, and charms, as indicated in the introduction. The book is one of the concise books on grammar whereby the author wanted to talk about just one aspect of grammar, which is the addition. Therefore, the book was brief in its pages, yet abundant in its scientific material. Ibn Juma’a wanted to connect between syntax and other sciences such as logic and theology. Hence, we can see in several places that the author tries to clarify the meaning of addition through finding justification in the speakers’ expressions and the context of use. This shows his ingenuity in these sciences, an approach adopted by many grammarians. The study was divided into two chapters; the first is the study whereby we talked about two topics. The first addresses the author; his name, autobiography and publications. The second included talking about the book and its content of scientific material, and then the description of the manuscript. The research ends up with sources and references
